Energy efficient pumps, which are single-speed, are an excellent choice for virtually any type of pool. They are very durable, quiet, and use far less energy than their non-energy efficient counterparts. The best-selling energy efficient pump is the Pentair Whisperflo, followed by the Hayward Tri-Star. It's important to recognize that although an energy efficient pump initially costs approximately $100 more than non-energy efficient pumps, over a one year period, the energy savings from an energy efficient pump will more than pay for itself.

Multi-speed pumps refer to pumps with more than 1 speed, e.g., 2-speed and variable speed pumps. Variable speed pumps, like the Pentair Intelliflo pump save a minimum of 30% on energy vs. an energy efficient pump because of the more efficient permanent-magnet motor design. Plus, costs are further reduced because the water is circulated at a lower speed.

Circulating water at a lower speed is more efficient because the pump uses less energy overcoming the resistance encountered when pumping water through a 1.5" or 2" pipe at a high velocity. So, although the pump would be required run longer to turnover a pool each day, it would still save energy. This principle is very similar to that of driving a car 55 MPH vs. 110 MPH. It will take the car longer to make the drive; however, far less energy would be consumed.

2-speed pumps have a high and a low-speed. In low-speed the impeller spins half as fast (1725 rpm) as high speed (3450) rpm. It's preferable to circulate the pool at low-speed, and use high speed to vacuum, backwash, or run the spa. Our best selling 2-speed pump is the Hayward Tri-Star.

Variable speed pumps are the most efficient of all, as they utilize a permanent magnet motor (similar to an electric car) as opposed to a traditional induction motor, which are less efficient. There are several benefits to a variable speed pump vs. a 2-speed or single-speed pump:

It is inherently 30% more efficient

The speed (impeller RPM) can be set to virtually any speed, eliminating hydraulic issues

It will last longer because it won't incur damage stemming from hydraulic issues

It is quieter

It can be used in place of other pumps.

California regulates pump sizing under Title 20. CA residents cannot install a single-speed pump with a total horsepower (rated HP X service factor) greater than 1 HP. If the pump exceeds 1 total HP, then a multi-speed pump with an approved controller must be purchased. Call the Sales Department for more information.

Above-ground pool pumps cost less initially, pump less water, and have a shorter-life span than energy efficient pumps. They are designed for above-ground pools and small in-ground pools. The Hayward Power-Flo is the best selling above-ground pool pump.

Above-ground spa pumps are designed to be installed under the skirt of a jacuzzi tub / spa. They do not have a pump basket.

Booster pumps are used to propel pressure-side cleaners, like the Polaris® 280, Hayward Phantom, or Pentair Legend. Booster pumps are universal / interchangeable. The Polaris® booster pump is our best seller.

Waterfall pumps are "medium" head pumps designed to handle high-pressure more than high-flow. These are not recommended for use as a circulation pump. LESS
